The Cut: A Revolutionary Kitchen Design by Alessandro Isola

Award-winning design redefines the kitchen as a flexible, sculptural centerpiece

Renowned designer Alessandro Isola introduces "The Cut," a groundbreaking kitchen design that combines flexibility, functionality, and aesthetics. This innovative concept, which won the Golden A' Furniture Design Award in 2015, challenges traditional kitchen norms and offers a fresh approach to modern living.

Isola's inspiration for "The Cut" came from a residential project where a flexible and sculptural kitchen was needed as the focal point of the apartment. The designer questioned why a kitchen should be fixed and unmovable, considering its role as the hub of the home. The result is a kitchen with a strong personality, designed to seduce, surprise, and entertain through its ability to adjust to use and desire.

"The Cut" is a parallelepiped divided into two pieces that can rotate and fix into different configurations based on the user's needs. A line cuts through the top block to create a slot for a table surface that can slide horizontally and rotate. The user can decide the final configuration of their kitchen, adding a level of interactivity and personalization to the space.

The materials used in the design, including lacquer doors, quartz worktop, timber table, and metal inner skin, were strategically chosen to enhance the concept of flexibility and movement. The cuts are accentuated by creating contrast between the outer and inner skin, adding to the kitchen's visual appeal.

One of the most challenging aspects of the project was designing the sliding and rotating table. Other technical challenges included the cantilevering of the upper block and the vertical sliding of the units hung from the ceiling. Despite these challenges, Isola and his team successfully realized their vision, presenting "The Cut" at the Milan Design Week in April 2014.

With "The Cut," Alessandro Isola has redefined the concept of the kitchen, transforming it into a flexible, adaptable, and aesthetically pleasing space. The design reflects the evolution of modern lifestyles, where space utilization and adaptability are key. It's not just a kitchen; it's a conversation starter, a centerpiece, and a testament to the power of innovative design.
